Madhya Pradesh, India
As part of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s (BPCL) ambitious expansion of the Bina Refinery in Madhya Pradesh, the VRC Group is executing a critical infrastructure package titled Civil, Structural and Underground (UG) Piping Works-1 for the Ethylene Cracker Unit (ECU). This project, valued at ₹309.82 Crore, plays a pivotal role in enhancing the refinery’s petrochemical output and operational efficiency through precision-driven civil and structural development.
The total duration of the project is planned for 19 months, starting from July 2025 and concluding in February 2027.
Project Overview
This strategic undertaking forms an essential component of the larger Bina Petchem and Refinery Expansion Project (BPREP), designed to augment India’s petrochemical capabilities. The scope covers comprehensive civil construction, structural steel erection, and underground utility piping required to support the functioning of the ECU. The work spans across excavation, foundation laying, fabrication, and erection of steel structures, along with an integrated network of utility pipelines and drainage systems.
With its extensive detailing and high safety and quality standards, the project underlines VRC Group’s expertise in delivering complex and large-scale refinery infrastructure in a time-bound manner.
Foundation Development
To establish a structurally sound base, the sub-structure works involve excavation in all soil types including soft rock through methods like controlled blasting, chiseling, or chemical techniques. This is followed by precise laying of PCC and RCC foundations, backfilling, and piling works as per the project’s engineering specifications.
Robust Super-Structure Steelworks
The project includes structural steel fabrication using rolled steel, built-up sections, and tubular or hollow sections. These elements will be supplied, fabricated, assembled, and erected at various elevations and locations, with all structures thoroughly tested and verified. Detailed fabrication drawings will be developed to ensure engineering accuracy.
Integrated Underground Utilities
An elaborate underground piping system is being laid to manage essential refinery operations. This includes oily water sewer systems, chemical-resistant pipelines, process blowdown lines, fire water and cooling water networks, and storm water drainage systems. The installation involves trench excavation, sand filling, and acid or alkali-proof lining where required.
Civil and Architectural Scope
The general civil works include the construction of RCC pavements, approach roads, hard stands, valve pits, manholes, and compound walls. In addition, architectural works such as roofing systems, flashings, and rainwater drainage will be completed to support the operational environment of the facility.
Site Preparation and Modification
Dismantling of select existing facilities is also within the scope, ensuring seamless integration of the new infrastructure with minimal disruption. This includes removal of redundant structures to make way for new installations and construction.
Major Structures to be Developed
The major structures in this package include pipe racks and pipe bridges, technological structures, reactor units, compressor sheds and foundations, equipment foundations, liquid-retaining underground pits, sumps, and multiple trenches. These structures are critical to supporting the core refining and petrochemical processes of the ECU.
Conclusion
This project is a crucial element of BPCL’s Bina Petchem and Refinery Expansion vision. With a focus on structural integrity, safety, and efficiency, the civil, structural, and underground piping works for the Ethylene Cracker Unit will contribute significantly to enhancing the refinery’s production capabilities. VRC Group’s proven track record in high-value infrastructure projects ensures that this critical phase will be executed with engineering precision and operational excellence.
The successful completion of this project will not only reinforce the functionality of the expanded refinery but also serve as a benchmark in India’s journey toward petrochemical self-sufficiency.
